The Collar City Clay Guild is an association of regional potters/clay artists based in Troy NY. Our purpose includes the sharing of techniques, experience, and ideas with others who have the same passion and objectives for working in clay. CCCG is an outlet to discuss successes and challenges ranging from the technical to creative to business issues. We encourage other clay artists to share their knowledge through workshops, lectures, and exhibits.
Our meetings which incorporate a mix of business and socializing, are generally held monthly on the 4th Sunday. We host mini-workshops, as well as national and internationally known artists whenever possible. Northeast Ceramic Supply has held community workshops featuring Gay Smith, Phil Rogers, and Jeff Zamek. As a group, we have learned about majolica, reed-handle making, and photographing our work. CCCG frequently organizes group events that include Northeast based pottery trails, gallery visits, museum tours, workshops, and other items of interest. Once a year we gather for a picnic that incorporates Raku and pit firing.
CCCG annually hosts a booth space for selling our work at Riverfest (June) and the Victorian Stroll (December) in downtown Troy, as well as other local events. As a group, we can encourage community art events and make showcasing our work a fun and profitable experience. The Guild also sponsors an annual weekend Pottery Fest, located at the Shaker Site near the Albany airport. This event includes a chance to feature individual artists, demonstrations, and a Raku firing in the Capitol district.
Collar City Clay Guild also supports an annual Empty Bowls event in early October. EBP is a non-profit organization, inspired by a Michigan art teacher whose students wanted to do something specific to address hunger issues. Similar events are held nationwide. Area potters donate bowls, and local restaurants donate soup, chowder, stew, bread, and other goodies. For a small donation, attendees may select a handmade bowl, get a simple meal, and are reminded that many among us are hungry on a daily basis. All proceeds from this event are donated to seven local food banks and pantries. We hosted this event for the first time in 2005, and it has been growing bigger and better each year!
CCCG issues a monthly newsletter, which helps keep members informed of guild business. It also includes news submitted by members about various shows, classes and events that might be of interest to clay artists.
Annual dues: $25.
